Police arrest Puna burglary suspect
Police have arrested an 18-year-old Hilo man for a Thursday burglary in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
According to a police log, Darren K. Ornellas was taken into custody shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday at Keokea Beach Park in North Kohala. He had not been charged as of Sunday morning.
Ornellas was the subject of a bulletin seeking the public’s help in his capture.
At about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a home on 23rd Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park. A 62-year-old HPP man reported seeing a suspicious male go to the front door of his neighbor’s house and then to the rear, where he discovered signs of a break-in.
The neighbor confronted the suspect as he was seen running from the home and into some bushes.
Police learned that cash and electronic devices were stolen from the home.
