Police arrest 16 for DUI
During the week of March 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Puna, six.
• Kona and South Hilo, five each.
So far this year, there have been 255 DUI arrests compared with 227 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.3 percent.
There have been 262 major accidents so far this year compared with 288 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent.
So far this year, there have been five official traffic fatalities, the same as at this time last year. There also have been three fatalities that do not count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
