15 drivers accused of DUI
During the week of July 14-20, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 9; Puna and North Kohala, 2 each; and South Hilo and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 664 DUI arrests compared to 676 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.8 percent.
There have been 856 major accidents so far this year compared to 772 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.9 percent.
So far this year, there have been eight official traffic fatalities compared to 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent.
To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
