Howling and meowing holidays: Annual pet walk, morning of activities benefit animal sanctuary

Howling and Meowing Holidays, a fabulously furry fundraiser benefiting Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary, is set for 7:30-11:30 a.m. Dec. 17 at the Hawaiian Paradise Park Community Center.

Registration for the popular dog walk starts at 7:30 a.m. with music by Christy and Dennis Soares, followed by games, a best holiday-dressed dog contest, a lucky-prize drawing, silent auction, dog agility session, flying disc competition, kickball for dogs, photos with Santa, ono food and vendors.

This year’s 11th annual event is supported by local businesses donating special items for the silent auction, as well as fantastic prizes for entrants who raise the most sponsorship dollars for the fundraising walk.

Walkers with the most dog or cat companion team sponsorship dollars will win a one-night stay for two at the newly renovated Hilo Grand Naniloa Hotel in a Bay View Room and a round of golf. Aloha Crater Lodge &Lava Tube Bed &Breakfast in Volcano is donating a night stay in one of its Honeymoon Suites and Alii Kane Cottages in Volcano is offering a night stay in its charming facility.

To be eligible for the prizes, participants can enter the walk with a $15 donation for the first dog or cat and $5 for any additional pet. Before Dec. 17, ask friends, family members, neighbors and business associates to sponsor you and your dog or your cat with $10, $20, $50, $100 or more. The more you raise to benefit the animals at Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary, the closer you get to win one of the prizes.

The Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary, an animal alive facility in Kurtistown, currently is home to 69 dogs and 275 cats.
