Waiakea grad earns academic honor
Waiakea High School graduate Elizabeth Brauher has been selected to the Academic All-District 3 Team.
Brauher graduated from Nova Southeaster University in Davie, Fla., in May with a 4.0 grade point average and a psychology degree.
Pursuing a master's in public health, the Hilo native tallied three goals and four assists for the Sharks' soccer team, which recently completed a 6-8-1 season in the Division II Sunshine State Conference.
Brauher is eligible for academic All-American honors, which will be announced Nov. 17.
Kabalis sisters head to regional
Sisters Kaleinani and Kuulei Kabalis, from Hilo, are playing for the Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team (36-3), which is competing in the South Region IX tournament this weekend.
The winner advances to the NJCAA National Volleyball Championships. Last year, the Cougars placed third in nationals and Kaleinani was named to the all-tournament team and a second team All-American.
In October, the 5-foot-9 outside hitter, who graduated from Moanalua High, collected her 1,000th kill in her second year at the school. She is currently nationally ranked in the top 3 among kill leaders.
Kuulei, a 2009 graduate of Kamehameha-Hawaii, is a freshman setter.
Kam grad set to run in regionals
Jordan Lerma, a freshman at Saint Mary's College, will compete at the NCAA Division I Western cross country regional on Nov. 14 at the University of Oregon.
The 2009 Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate's best finish for the Gaels was 18th overall Oct. 3 in a time of 27 minutes, 4 seconds at an 8-kilometer (5 miles) race.
Honokaa hiring JV hoops coach
Honokaa High School is seeking a head coach for its boys junior varsity basketball team.
Applications can be picked up at the school office or athletic director's office during school hours.

Hilo Reign holding rugby tryouts
The Hilo Reign Rugby Club will hold sign-ups from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. each Tuesday in November at the Panaewa Community Center.
The youth rugby team is for players ages 8 to 18. The fee is $25, $30 or $40.
At the sign-up, players need to bring a copy of their medical insurance and birth certificate as well as one of the following: a copy of their passport, current school identification, state ID or driver's license.
Practice will start in December.

St. Joe alumni basketball game
St. Joseph High School will hold an alumni basketball event on Saturday, Dec. 5.
The school is looking for graduates and former students to play against the following three high school teams: girls varsity, boys JV, and boys varsity. The girls play at 2:00, boys JV at 4:00, and boys varsity at 6:00. There will be a potluck dinner immediately following the boys varsity game. The public is invited to attend. Admission is 1 non-perishable food item per person to donate to the Food Bank.
