Big Islanders battle in NAGA event
Penn Academy's students capture various honors
About a dozen dedicated students from the Penn Training and Fitness Centers Children's Jiu Jitsu Academy made the journey to the state's most prestigious tournament of grappling on Oct. 18 at Pearl City High School.
The North American Grappling Association (NAGA) is a nationally ranked tournament which is held across the country in almost every state throughout the year. This tournament which is open to practitioners of Jiu Jitsu, judo, and wrestling. It's a submission tournament where chokes and arm-bars are allowed, a Penn Academy spokesman said.
Leading the way that day for the victories was the Penn Academy's highest ranking student 12-year-old Shaedon Quevedo, an orange belt who has been undefeated in competition the last two years. He captured the prestigious NAGA 1st place samurai sword in the Advanced division in both the GI and NO GI divisions.
The stunner of the day was pulled off by 14-year-old Queno Carvalho, a Hilo High School 9th grader. He only trained for a week in Jiu Jitsu with instructor Jay Penn and captured the prestigious NAGA 1st place swords in both the NO GI and GI divisions.
The only girl competitor from the group was 14-year-old Hillary Luna, also a Hilo High 9th grader. Luna, who was registered in the 125-pound beginners' division, was asked to move up two divisions and take on the challenge of the advanced heavyweight division.
Luna quickly overpowered her larger opponent, who weighed 140 pounds, and was victorious over Stephanie Casales of Chicago, the current Mid-West and Arnold's NAGA girls heavyweight champion.
Other winners from the Penn Academy included Conrad Parks, 12, a Waiakea Intermediate student who took home a 1st and 2nd place in the Advanced division; Kaaumoana Estrella, 11, who took home three 1st place swords in the beginners division; Kaleb Medeiros, 10, who captured two 2nd place and one 3rd place; Titus Kerr, 14, who took home a 3rd; Craiglen "Malu" Lapilio, 12, who claimed two 2nd places; and Vincent Searle, 12, who captured a 2nd.
