National Historic Preservation Act meetings set
The public is invited to attend several informational sessions the Army is holding to build awareness and understanding of its cultural resource responsibilities.
U.S. Army Garrison-Pohakuloa Training Area will host two meetings on the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 process and solicit additional feedback on its draft Hawaii Island programmatic agreement for routine military training.
The meetings are: 5-7 p.m., Aug. 29, at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo, and 5-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, Paddler’s Room in Kailua-Kona.
The draft PA describes how the Army proposes to avoid, minimize and resolve any potential effects routine training and related activities may have on historic properties. Deadline for exhibit entries extended
The deadline for entries for the Art by Hand: Contemporary Craft Juried Exhibit has been extended through 7 p.m. on Friday (Aug. 24.).
The maximum number of entries allowed is five; cost is $17 per entry. Enter at CaFE (callforentry.org).
The exhibit will feature clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and mixed media pieces from throughout the state and will be on display from Sept. 7-27 at Wailoa Center in Hilo.
The juror for the show is ceramic artist Amber Aguirre. The exhibit is sponsored by Hawaii Island Arts Alliance.
A reception and awards presentation is slated for 5-7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Wailoa Center, with a juror’s gallery walk/talk scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 8.

Basic Mediation Training scheduled
Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s annual Basic Mediation Training will run from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 22-23 and will continue from Sept. 29-30.
Training is led by Diane Petropulos, M.A. and Catherine Lampton, M.A., two experienced mentor mediators, facilitators, and trainers.
People in conflict often focus on each other as the problem, going head to head. Mediation helps people focus on the issues, so they can see they have a joint problem to solve.
Over four days, learn the process of mediation and how to apply advanced communication skills — such as active listening, summarizing and rephrasing and using open-ended questions — to help parties resolve differences.
This interactive training is perfect for anyone who wants to communicate more effectively personally and professionally, become a better negotiator and problem-solver, and increase your value in the workplace.
Upon successful completion of the training, participants may apply to join Ku‘ikahi’s mediator apprenticeship program.
The cost of the program is $325, with group discounts and individual needs-based scholarships available. Preregistration is required.
