Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Friday lowered Kilauea volcano’s alert level for ground-based hazards from “warning” to “watch” in the wake of reduced eruption activity over the last several days.
The change indicates that hazards posed by crater collapse events at the Kilauea summit and lava flows of in the lower East Rift Zone are diminished, but “does not mean with absolute certainty” that the eruption or summit collapses are over.
It’s possible that such activity could resume, HVO said.
