According to a Hawaii Volcanoes National Park news release, the fire’s size remains at 3,739 acres on the northeastern slopes of Mauna Loa. Thanks to cool weather and afternoon cloud cover, the fire remained low throughout Tuesday, helping firefighters improve their control over the .
The fire was declared to be 80 percent controlled Tuesday morning.
Fire crews continued to secure a fire line on the fire’s northern edge. Crews also continued work on securing the southern edge of the blaze south of Kipuka Ki Special Ecological Area.
Crews also improved safety along Mauna Loa Road by preemptively felling certain trees that had been compromised by the fire.
While Hilo-bound traffic on Highway 11 may be able to see the fire, it will otherwise not interfere with travel.
