KEALAKEKUA — An 18-year-old accused of sexual assault remains in police custody and is being detained without bail after violating terms of his initial release from jail in February.
Samuel Latrik appeared Tuesday before Kona Circuit Judge Robert D.S. Kim to discuss the return of a bench warrant, which was issued Friday after the Hawaii Intake Service Center filed documents indicating Latrik violated the terms of his release by not checking in with his social worker.
Latrik was arrested at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Kealakehe police station.
Kim rescheduled the hearing for Thursday, as a court Marshallese interpreter was not available to assist with translating proceedings to Latrik.
Latrik was arrested in January and charged as the second suspect in the sexual assault of a woman Sept. 3, 2016, at Old Kona Airport Park.
A Kona grand jury indicted Latrik in January on three counts of first-degree sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, kidnapping, second-degree robbery, first-degree terroristic threatening and sexual assault. A jury trial is scheduled for Oct. 23.
During a bail hearing in February, Kim lowered Latrik’s bail from $50,000 to $25,000. Part of the conditions of Latrik’s release were that he check in twice a month face-to-face with his social worker and call every Wednesday.
According to court documents, Latrik had not reported by phone or in person to Hawaii Intake Service Center from June 27-July 17.
Latrik’s co-defendant, Tyrone Sigrah, pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault, second-degree assault, kidnapping and second-degree robbery. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 18.
