‘Pahoa strong’
The May Day celebration at Pahoa Elementary School was a beautiful effort to continue on as normally as possible during these trying times.
Many of the staff, students and their families are enduring losses while maintaining their love and strength for each other and the culture of our island within their hearts.
Pahoa strong — forever.

Unexpected surprise
One of the pleasant, if unexpected, results of Madame Pele’s eruptions, the 4.5 and very scary 6.9 earthquakes, the sulfurous vog and the incredible volcanic show she’s been putting on, has been a steady stream of phone calls from all over the planet asking if we’re still alive.
We are! And we’re happy to hear from friends we haven’t heard from in years.
We offer our thanks to you incomparable, amazing, awesome goddess of the volcano!

‘Racially motivated’
Hawaii does and has had its share of racial injustices for a long time, but not on the massive scale as compared with the continental United States.
It seems that when African-Americans fall victim to excessive use of force by the police, including shootings, the media always seem to mention the injustices done to this ethnic group as “racially motivated.”
Such is the recent case where two African-Americans were arrested at a mainland Starbucks for refusing to leave.
Was it necessary to mention the race of the two men? Would the race be mentioned and the words “racially motivated” be used by the media if the two males were white, Asian, Hispanic or Polynesian?
Maybe the news media seeks to add fuel to the fire for higher ratings.
