The Hilo Heart Walk will take place Saturday at Hilo Bayfront Park with on-site registration at 6:30 a.m. followed by the walk at 8 a.m. A health fair and entertainment take place from 7-11 a.m.
Three-mile or 1.5-mile walking routes are offered depending on ability. Free “hands-only” CPR lessons and a keiki fun fair also will be offered.
The event is designed to bring families and friends together to learn, share and practice lifestyle habits that will lead to healthier, longer lives free of heart disease and stroke, Honma said.
Participants are encouraged to raise money to support the American Heart Association’s work to end heart disease and stroke and improve the health of Hawaii Island residents.
“The Heart Walk is a way to help people in Hawaii learn and practice healthier lifestyles,” Honma said. “Eighty percent of heart disease and stroke is preventable if people begin to eat smarter, add color to their plates (including more fruits and vegetables), move more and create balance in their lives.
“Our Heart Walk guests will be provided not only the opportunity to move more by walking, but will also receive simple, fun tips on how to incorporate those other heart health factors into their lifestyles.”
