Police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that happened early this morning in Kailua-Kona.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department statement, the alarm was received at 5:49 a.m. for a male pedestrian struck by a septic pumping truck on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the entrance to Kaloko National Park.

A woman bystander was performing CPR on the victim when firefighters arrived. Firefighters took over, but were unable to revive the man, who was dead at the scene.

It’s unclear if the victim, who was was in the roadway when struck by the truck, which was operated by an adult male.

Traffic was detoured via Hina Lani Street and Kealakehe Parkway. The highway has since been reopened.

The pedestrian’s death is the fifth traffic fatality of the year on the Big Island, compared to four at this time last year.
