During the week of Feb. 12-18, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Kona, nine.
• Puna, four.
• South Hilo, three.
• North Hilo. South Kohala and Ka‘u, one each.
So far this year, there have been 142 DUI arrests compared with 171 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.
There have been 149 major accidents so far this year compared to 186 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.9 percent.
To date, there have been four traffic fatalities on the island compared with four fatalities at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
