UH-Hilo senior first baseman Phillip Steering on Monday was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week after helping the Vuls to their first four-game baseball sweep since 2013.
In a 5-0 win over Saint Martin’s, Steering went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. He also scored twice. The next day during a 15-10 slugfest, the Lake Forest, Calif., native was 3 for 6 with a double and two RBI, scoring twice.
Last year, Steering was a Second Team All-PacWest pick, and a Third Team Academic All-American.
The Vulcans (4-4) play their Alumni at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wong Stadium, then they welcome Biola for their PacWest opener March 1.
• Women’s golf: Keely Kitamura shot a 20-over 90 in the first round and the Vuls (94-over 374) checked in last of 16 teams at the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin, Texas.
Dillyn Sakai was at 91 for UHH and she was followed by Kiri Oshiro (93), Kimberly Katayama (100) and Rachel Soans (110).
Led by Casey Wild (73), Tarleton State (Texas) took a three-shot lead to the final round at 299. St. Mary’s Maria Regina Gonzalez shared the lead with Wild.
