“Why Animals Matter,” a presentation by Dr. Katherine Young of the University of Hawaii at Hilo Political Science Department, is open to the public from 5-6 p.m. today at the UH-Hilo Student Services Center, Room W-201.
“Every year, billions of animals are killed for human needs around the world,” Young said. “Many of these animals are killed for food and often within the context of industrialized agriculture. Why do we eat animals? Why do we use them for human interests at all?
“How does our treatment of animals link to global issues that radically impact human communities, such as climate change and economic inequality?
“Finding answers to these questions is important for rethinking the global political imaginary, and may demand a new politics beyond individual choice and the values of neoliberal capitalism,” Young added.
The free presentation is part of the International Topics Speaker Series sponsored by the United Nations Association of the USA Hawaii Island.
