Police say a gunshot was fired at a police officer this morning in Puna, and are seeking a 29-year-old Puna woman they think knows the identity of the suspect.

Police say officers responded to a 6 a.m. report of gunshots fired followed by a woman yelling in the Tiki Gardens subdivision, which is adjacent to Ainaloa subdivision in Puna.

One of the responding officers encountered a man attempting to leave the area on a dirt bike. Police say the bike hit the ground and the rider stood, pointed a gun and fired a shot at the officer, then ran into nearby bushes. The officer was not struck by the bullet and did not return fire, police say.

Officers searched, so far unsuccessfully, for the suspect.

Detectives learned that the woman reportedly left in a vehicle shortly after the initial incident. They believe her to be 29-year-old Angel Ano of Tiki Gardens. Police are trying to find Ano to check on her welfare and speak to her about the incident.

Detectives have classified the investigation as an attempted murder.

Anyone with information, Ano’s whereabouts or the man known to operate the pictured motorcycle is asked to call the police nonemergency number at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
