Always popular with society members, nonmembers who have an interest in palms are invited to attend this year’s event. In addition to the silent and live auctions of rare palms, Tom Mirenda, director of horticulture, education and outreach at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, Onomea Bay, will be giving a special presentation about the garden.
The cost of the event, per person, is $ 17.50 for members and $ 19.50 for nonmembers. The fee covers the barbecue buffet dinner.
For more information or to inquire about registering, call Bob Gibbens at 333-5626. HIPS’ annual tax deductible membership fee is $15 for a calendar year.
The Hawaii Island Palm Society is composed of people who simply love palms and strive to promote their use in private gardens and landscaping. As an affiliate of the International Palm Society, it is the society’s goal to perpetuate rare and endangered palms worldwide through the sharing of seed and plants.
This volunteer organization was first organized in 1974 and now comprises more than 270 family memberships. Tours of private palm gardens each summer are one of the highlights on the society’s yearly calendar. HIPS also is involved in the planning, planting and maintaining of the palm tree collection at the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens.
