Bayfront Highway in Hilo is closed to traffic due to high surf, Hawaii County Civil Defense said Friday morning.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for north-facing shores of Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna today through the weekend.

Surf is predicted to increase up to 16 feet. Highest impacts will coincide with the high-tide period at 9 a.m. this morning.

Oceanfront residents, boat owners and beach-goers are advised to secure their property and to be on alert for possible high and dangerous surf.

Additional road and beach closures may occur without notice.
