Matthias Shepherd, 64, of Hilo died Dec. 23 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for the former Brewer Chemical, U.S. Army veteran and member of 3 Days 3 Nights Study Hall. Visitation 5-6 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 6) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 6 p.m. Visitation again 9-10 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 7) at the mortuary. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire. Survived by wife, Rose Shepherd of Hilo; sons, Cyrus Ua and Caylan (Trena) Ua of Hilo, Cameron (Melinda) Ua of North Carolina; daughter, Aven (Kaleo Cusick) Shepherd of Hilo; brothers, Noah Shepherd of Kona, Christian Originel, David (Lorena) Ua and Calavin (Janet) Crum Sr. of Hilo; sisters, Hope (Tommy Garcia) Kealoha and Hauoli (Seth) Freeman of Hilo; 12 grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Yoshiaki Shimizu, 99, of Honolulu and Hilo died Dec. 22 at Straub Clinic in Honolulu. Born in Honohina, he was a retired architectural drafting teacher at Hawaii Community College and U.S. Army Military Intelligence Service veteran in World War II. Committal services 3 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 7) at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl, Honolulu. Aloha attire. Survived by son, Byron Shimizu; daughter, Annette Shimizu; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Shimizu; son-in-law, Howard Luke; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation for the late Donald “Buddy” Howard Brandt is 8:30-10 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 6) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo, with funeral Mass at 10 a.m. The place was omitted from an obituary published Thursday.
