Big Dog scholarships

Big Dog scholarships

Applications are being accepted for the 11th annual Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarships.

The scholarships will go to four graduating seniors in recognition of their participation in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation cross-country or track program.

The committee will select four recipients, who will each receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

The purpose of the scholarship is to financially assist qualified student athletes to pursue their goals of higher education and to ultimately make a positive contribution to the island community.

To be selected means the student-athlete has demonstrated not only a willingness to make the sacrifices necessary to excel in his or her running activities, but also strives toward excellence in all aspects of school and community endeavors.

Wayne Joseph, who died in January 2013 from glioblastoma (brain cancer), was an avid runner and community volunteer.

His wife, Randee Arkin Joseph, said her husband always said, “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see young people enjoying life through sports participation.”

Applications can be found on the Big Island Road Runners website bigislandroadrunners.org or by contacting Randee at rarkin24@hotmail.com.
