The Mauna Kea Management Board will meet from 10 a.m.-noon today to discuss a number of items, including the Thirty Meter Telescope decommissioning funding plan.
The meeting will take place at the W.M. Keck Observatory Hualalai Learning Theater located at 65-1120 Mamalahoa Highway in Kamuela.
The Thirty Meter Telescope is a $1.3 billion joint project between universities in California and Canada and research institutions in China, India and Japan, and is poised to be one of the world’s most advanced telescopes built atop Mauna Kea. Construction is expected to start this spring, pending final approval of the project’s sublease from the University of Hawaii by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources.
The decommissioning plan for Mauna Kea Observatories is a subplan of the Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan and its purpose is to describe a process for decommissioning observatories on Mauna Kea, including financial planning.
